Algebra, chapter II, § 7. Vector spaces

Let AA be an integral domain. For every AA-module EE, let T(E)T(E) denote the torsion submodule of EE. Let f:E→E′f : E \to E' be an AA-linear mapping, EE and E′E' being AA-modules.

(i) f(T(E))⊂T(E′)f(T(E)) \subset T(E'). (ii) If ff is injective, f(T(E))=T(E′)∩f(E)f(T(E)) = T(E') \cap f(E). (iii) If ff is surjective and Ker⁡(f)⊂T(E)\operatorname{Ker}(f) \subset T(E), then f(T(E))=T(E′)f(T(E)) = T(E').

Assertions (i) and (ii) are obvious. On the other hand, if ff is surjective and x′∈T(E′)x' \in T(E'), then x′=f(x)x' = f(x), where x∈Ex \in E, and by hypothesis there exists α≠0\alpha \neq 0 in AA such that f(αx)=αx′=0f(\alpha x) = \alpha x' = 0; whence αx∈Ker⁡(f)\alpha x \in \operatorname{Ker}(f) and by the hypothesis there exists β≠0\beta \neq 0 in AA such that β(αx)=0\beta(\alpha x) = 0; as βα≠0\beta \alpha \neq 0, x∈T(E)x \in T(E).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
