Algebra, chapter III, § 3. Graded algebras
(1) Let be a graded ring of type ; if is given its canonical -algebra structure (§ 1, no. 1, Example 2), is a graded -algebra ( being given the trivial graduation).
(2) Let be a graded commutative ring of type and a graded -module of type . Suppose that all the elements of the monoid are cancellable, which allows (II, § 11, no. 6) us to define on a graded -module structure of type ; as this graduation is compatible with the ring structure on (II, § 11, no. 6), it defines a unital graded -algebra structure on the -algebra .
(3) Algebra of a magma. Let be a magma and a homomorphism. For all , we write ; then . Let be a graded commutative ring of type and its graduation; we shall define a graded -algebra structure on the algebra of the magma (§ 2, no. 6). To this end, let denote the additive subgroup of generated by the elements of the form such that and . As the are pairwise disjoint, is the direct sum of the and hence also the direct sum of the and it is immediate that the satisfy conditions (1) and (2) and therefore define on the desired graded -algebra structure. If admits an identity element , it may also be supposed that . A particular case is the one where the graduation of the ring is trivial; then is the sub--module of generated by . More particularly, if we take and the mapping such that , the ring having the trivial graduation, a graduation is thus obtained on the polynomial algebra , for which the degree of a homogeneous polynomial is the total degree defined in § 2, no. 9 (cf. § 6, no. 6).
We now take to be the free monoid of a set (I, § 7, no. 2) and the homomorphism which associates with each word its length. Thus a graded -algebra structure is obtained on the free associative algebra of the set (§ 2, no. 7; cf. § 5, no. 5).
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
