Algebra, chapter IV, § 4. Formal power series
— Let be the set of all formal power series with constant term 1. By Prop. 6, is a commutative group under multiplication; the multiplicative group of is thus the direct product of and the multiplicative group of . We shall equip with the topology induced from that of . For each we have in IV, p. 26 defined the ideal of ; then is a subgroup of and the family is a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 1 in . Since the multiplication in is continuous, we see that is a topological group (Gen. Top., III, p. 223); in other words, the mapping is continuous in .
Let be a commutative field and the subring of the field of rational fractions formed of rational fractions in which the element 0 of is substitutable. If , we have , where and are polynomials such that the constant term of is , hence is invertible in . We can verify at once that the element of depends only on ; we say that the formal power series is the expansion at the origin of the rational fraction . The mapping is an injective homomorphism of into ; we shall often identify with its image under this mapping.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
