Algebra, chapter IV, § 5. Symmetric tensors and polynomial mappings

— Let MM be a free AA-module, kk an integer ≥0\geq 0, PP the sub-AA-module of TSk(M)\mathbf{TS}^k(M) generated by γk(M)\gamma_k(M). Assume AA to be an infinite integral domain. Then for each z∈TSk(M)z \in \mathbf{TS}^k(M) there exists a∈A−{0}a \in A - \{0\} such that az∈Paz \in P.

Let KK be the field of fractions of AA. We identify TSk(M)\mathbf{TS}^k(M) with a sub-A-module of the vector K-space V=TSk(M)⊗AKV = \mathbf{TS}^k(M) \otimes_A K (Prop. 4, and II, p. 314). We have to show that this vector K-space is generated by γk(M)\gamma_k(M), that is, every K-linear form ff on V satisfying f(γk(M))=0f(\gamma_k(M)) = 0 is zero. Let (ei)i∈I(e_i)_{i \in I} be a basis of M, and define the e, as in Prop. 4. For any (αi)∈A(I)(\alpha_i) \in A^{(I)} we have, on taking (6) into account,

0=f(γk(∑i∈IαieI))=∑ν∈N(I),∣ν∣=kανf(eν). 0 = f \left( \gamma_k \left( \sum_{i \in I} \alpha_i e_I \right) \right) = \sum_{\nu \in N^{(I)}, |\nu| = k} \alpha^\nu f(e_\nu).

By Cor. 2 of IV, p. 18 it follows that f(eν)=0f(e_\nu) = 0 for all ν∈N(I)\nu \in N^{(I)}, whence f=0f = 0.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
