Algebra, chapter IV, § 6. Symmetric functions

— a) If I is a finite set with n elements and n!⋅1n! \cdot 1 is invertible in A, then λI\lambda_I induces a bicontinuous isomorphism of A[[P1,…,Pn]]A[[P_1, \ldots, P_n]] onto A[[X]]symA[[X]]^{\mathrm{sym}}. b) If I is infinite and A is a Q-algebra, then λI\lambda_I is a bicontinuous isomorphism of A[[P]]A[[P]] onto A[[X]]symA[[X]]^{\mathrm{sym}}. We shall treat the case a) only, the case b) being quite similar.

By Th. 2 (IV, p. 68) we can identify A[[X]]sym\mathbf{A}[[\mathbf{X}]]^{\text{sym}} with the algebra of formal power series A[[S1,…,Sn]]\mathbf{A}[[S_1, \ldots, S_n]], with SkS_k corresponding to sks_k. By Lemma 4 of IV, p. 70, there exist formal power series g1,…,gsg_1, \ldots, g_s of order ≥2\geq 2 in the indeterminates s1,…,sns_1, \ldots, s_n such that

pk=(−1)k+1ksk+gk(s1,…,ss)(1≤k≤n). p_k = (-1)^{k+1} k s_k + g_k(s_1, \ldots, s_s) \quad (1 \leq k \leq n).

Since k!.1k! . 1 is invertible in A\mathbf{A}, Lemma 2 of IV, p. 35 proves the existence of an automorphism TT of the topological A\mathbf{A}-algebra A[[X]]sym\mathbf{A}[[\mathbf{X}]]^{\text{sym}} which maps sks_k to pkp_k for l≤k≤nl \leq k \leq n. Now Prop. 3, a) is an immediate consequence.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
