Algebra, chapter V, § 1. Prime fields. Characteristic

Let $A$ be an algebra not reduced to 0 over a field $K$ . Since the mapping $\lambda \mapsto \lambda \cdot 1$ of $K$ into $A$ is a ring homomorphism, Remark 1 shows that the characteristic of $A$ is defined and equal to that of $K$ .
