Algebra, V, p. 21, § 4. Algebraically closed extensions

Let K be a field and (fi)i∈I(f_i)_{i \in I} a family of non-constant polynomials in K[X]K[X]. By a splitting extension of (fi)i(f_i)_i, we understand any extension EE of KK with the following properties :

a) For each i∈Ii \in I, the polynomial fif_i splits in E[X]E[X] into a product of polynomials of degree 1.

b) For each i∈Ii \in I let RiR_i be the set of roots of fif_i in EE, then E=K(⋃i∈IRi)E = K \left( \bigcup_{i \in I} R_i \right).

Sometimes the term « splitting field » is used instead of « splitting extension ».

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
