Algebra, chapter V, § 6. Etale algebras

— Let AA be a commutative ring; then AA is said to be reduced if every nilpotent element (I, p. 98) of AA is zero.

If AA is a field, or an integral domain, or a product of reduced rings, it is a reduced ring. For a commutative ring AA to be reduced it is necessary and sufficient that a2≠0a^2 \neq 0 for every a≠0a \neq 0 in AA: for from this we obtain by induction on nn, a2n≠0a^{2^n} \neq 0, hence an≠0a^n \neq 0 for any a≠0a \neq 0 in AA.

An algebra is said to be reduced if its underlying ring is reduced.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
