Algebra, V, p. 35, § 6. Etale algebras

Let B be a reduced algebra of finite degree over a perfect field P; then B is etale.

By Prop. 5 there exist extensions L1,…,LnL_1, \ldots, L_n of PP such that BB is isomorphic to the algebra L,x…xLnL, x \ldots x L_n. Since a finite product of etale algebras is etale (V, p. 31, Cor.) it is enough to examine the case where BB is an extension of PP. By Th. 3 (V, p. 33) it is enough to show that dx=0dx = 0 in ΩP(B)\Omega_P(B) for all x∈Bx \in B.

Let x∈Bx \in B; since BB is of finite degree over KK, xx is algebraic over KK (V, p. 18, Prop. 2). Let ff be the minimal polynomial of xx and let f′f' be the derivative off. The polynomial ff is non-constant. Suppose that f′=0f' = 0; by V, p. 9, Cor. the field PP is of characteristic p≠0p \neq 0 and we have f∈P[Xp]f \in P[X^p]; since PP is perfect, we have P[Xp]=P[X]pP[X^p] = P[X]^p, but the irreducible polynomial ff cannot lie in P[X]pP[X]^p.

We thus have f′≠0f' \neq 0 and since the degree of f′f' is strictly less than that off, we have f′(x)≠0f'(x) \neq 0. Now from f(x)=0f(x) = 0 we deduce f(x)⋅dx=0f(x) \cdot dx = 0 in ΩP(B)\Omega_P(B), whence dx=0dx = 0, as we had to show.

*B) Suppose that AA is etale; by the equivalence of a) and b) the algebra AA is reduced, so there exist extensions L1,…,LnL_1, \ldots, L_n of KK such that AA is isomorphic to L1×⋯×LnL_1 \times \cdots \times L_n (Prop. 5). Since AA is etale, each of the extensions LiL_i is an etale algebra (V, p. 31, Cor.), and hence by definition is a separable algebraic extension of KK.

The implication d)⇒a)d) \Rightarrow a) follows from V, p. 31, Cor. \*

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
