Algebra, chapter V, § 6. Etale algebras

— Let AA be a commutative algebra of finite degree over KK. For AA to be reduced it is necessary and sufficient that there exist extensions L1,…,LsL_1, \ldots, L_s of finite degree over KK such that AA is KK-isomorphic to L1×⋯×LsL_1 \times \cdots \times L_s.

The stated condition is clearly sufficient.

Conversely, assume that AA is reduced; arguing by induction on the degree of AA we see that it suffices to prove that if AA is not a field, there exist two non-zero algebras A1A_1 and A2A_2 such that AA is isomorphic to A1×A2A_1 \times A_2, or also that there exists in AA an idempotent different from 0 and 1.

Suppose from now on that AA is reduced and is not a field. Among the ideals of AA different from 0 and AA let aa be an ideal whose dimension as vector KK-space is minimal. For any x≠0x \neq 0 in aa we have x2≠0x^2 \neq 0, because AA is reduced, whence a′≠{0}a' \neq \{0\}. We have a2⊂aa^2 \subset a and by the minimality of aa we find that a′=aa' = a. By Lemma 4 there exists an idempotent ee such that a=Aea = Ae, and we have e≠0,e≠1e \neq 0, e \neq 1 because aa is distinct from 0 and AA.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
