Algebra, chapter V, § 7. Separable algebraic extensions

— For a field KK to be perfect it is necessary and sufficient that every irreducible polynomial of K[X]K[X] should be separable.

If the field KK is of characteristic 00, KK is perfect and every irreducible polynomial of K[X]K[X] is separable, by d) above. Suppose then that KK has characteristic p≠0p \neq 0.

Suppose first that KK is perfect. We have K[Xp]=K[X]pK[X^p] = K[X]^p, hence there exists no irreducible polynomial of K[X]K[X] belonging to K[Xp]K[X^p]. By Prop. 4, every irreducible polynomial of K[X]K[X] is then separable.

Suppose next that KK is imperfect, whence K≠KpK \neq K^p. Let aa be an element of KK not belonging to KpK^p; the polynomial Xp−aX^p - a is irreducible in K[X]K[X] (V, p. 24, Lemma 1), and it belongs to K[Xp]K[X^p], and so is not separable.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
