Algebra, chapter V, § 7. Separable algebraic extensions

— Let f∈K[X]f \in K[X] be a non-zero polynomial. For ff to be separable it is necessary and sufficient that there should exist an extension LL of KK which is a perfect field and such that ff has no repeated factor in L[X]L[X].

Let Ω\Omega be an algebraic closure of KK; iff is separable, ff has no repeated factors in Ω[X]\Omega[X] (Prop. 3, d)). Conversely, if LL is a perfect extension of KK such that ff has no repeated factor in L[X]L[X], then ff is separable in L[X]L[X] (Cor. 1 and Remark 2), hence in K[X]K[X] (Remark 1).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
