Algebra, chapter V, § 7. Separable algebraic extensions

— Let KK be an algebraic closure of KK and Kp−∞K^{p^{-\infty}} the perfect closure of KK in K‾\overline{K}. For a subextension EE of K‾\overline{K} to be separable over KK it is necessary and sufficient that it should be linearly disjoint from Kp−∞K^{p^{-\infty}} over KK.

We can immediately reduce to the case where [E:K][E : K] is finite. Let (xi)i(x_i)_i, be a basis of EE over KK. For EE to be linearly disjoint from Kp−∞K^{p^{-\infty}} it is necessary and sufficient that it should be so from KpnK^{p^n} for all n≥0n \geq 0, and this just means that the relation ∑i∈Ixiaip−n=0\sum_{i \in I} x_i a_i^{p^{-n}} = 0 implies ai=0a_i = 0 for all i∈Ii \in I, for any family (ai)i(a_i)_i, of elements of KK. This in turn means that the family (xipn)i∈I(x_i^{p^n})_{i \in I} is free over KK, or also that it is a basis of the vector space EE over KK. Put differently, EE is linearly disjoint from Kp−nK^{p^{-n}} if and only if E=K(Epn)E = K(E^{p^n}). Now it suffices to apply Prop. 11.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
