Algebra, chapter V, § 10. Galois extensions

— For i=1,2i = 1, 2 let EiE_i be a subextension of NN and Γi\Gamma_i the Galois group of NN over EiE_i. The following conditions are equivalent: a) The group Γ\Gamma is the direct product of the subgroups Γ1\Gamma_1 and Γ2\Gamma_2. b) The extensions E1E_1 and E2E_2 are Galois over KK, we have E1∩E2=KE_1 \cap E_2 = K and

K(E1∪E2)=N. K(E_1 \cup E_2) = N .

For Γ\Gamma to be the direct product of the subgroups Γ1\Gamma_1 and Γ2\Gamma_2 it is necessary and sufficient that the following conditions hold (I, p. 48, Prop. 15): (i) the subgroups Γ1\Gamma_1 and Γ2\Gamma_2 are normal in Γ\Gamma; (ii) Γ1∩Γ2={ε}\Gamma_1 \cap \Gamma_2 = \{ \varepsilon \}, where ε\varepsilon is the neutral element of Γ\Gamma; (iii) Γ=Γ1.Γ2\Gamma = \Gamma_1 . \Gamma_2.

Now (i) means that E1E_1 and E2E_2 are Galois over KK (Cor. 4). By Cor. 2, condition (ii) is equivalent to N=K(E1∪E2)N = K(E_1 \cup E_2), and finally if (i) and (ii) hold, Γ1Γ2\Gamma_1 \Gamma_2 is the least subgroup of Γ\Gamma containing Γ1∪Γ2\Gamma_1 \cup \Gamma_2; it is closed because Γ1\Gamma_1 and Γ2\Gamma_2 are compact and the mapping (a,τ)↦στ(a, \tau) \mapsto \sigma \tau of Γ1×Γ2\Gamma_1 \times \Gamma_2 into Γ\Gamma is continuous (Gen. Top., I, p. 63, Cor. 1). Cor. 2 now shows (iii) to be equivalent to E1∩E2=KE_1 \cap E_2 = K, and this proves the equivalence of a) and b).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
