Algebra, chapter V, § 13. p-radical extensions of height _ 1

— Let K be a field, LL a p-radical extension of height ≤1\leq 1 of K and S a subset of L. For S to be p-free it is necessary and sufficient that K(T)≠K(S)K(T) \neq K(S) for every subset T≠ST \neq S of S.

Suppose first that S is p-free and let T≠ST \neq S be a subset of S. Denote by A the set of families with finite support a=(αs)s∈Sa = (\alpha_s)_{s \in S} of integers between 0 and p−1p-1; let A′A' be the subset of A consisting of the families a=(αs)s∈Sa = (\alpha_s)_{s \in S} such that as=0a_s = 0 for all s in S−TS - T. We also put ua=∏s∈Ssαsu_a = \prod_{s \in S} s^{\alpha_s} for a∈Aa \in A. Then (V, p. 98, Prop. 1) the family (ua)a∈A′(u_a)_{a \in A'} is a basis of K(S)K(S) over K and the subfamily (ua)a∈A′(u_a)_{a \in A'} is a basis of K(T)K(T) over K. Since A′≠AA' \neq A, we have K(T)≠K(S)K(T) \neq K(S).

Suppose now that S is not p-free. Then there exists an integer n≥1n \geq 1 and a sequence of elements x1,...,xnx_1, ..., x_n of S such that (x1,...,xn−1)(x_1, ..., x_{n-1}) is p-free but (x1,...,xn)(x_1, ..., x_n) is not. We have [K(x1,...,xn−1):K]=pn−1[K(x_1, ..., x_{n-1}):K] = p^{n-1} and [K(x1,...,xn):K]<pn[K(x_1, ..., x_n):K] < p^n. Since [K(x1,...,xn):K][K(x_1, ..., x_n):K] is a multiple of [K(x1,...,xn−1):K][K(x_1, ..., x_{n-1}):K], we thus have

[K(x1,...,xn):K]=[K(x1,...,xn−1):K]. [K(x_1, ..., x_n):K] = [K(x_1, ..., x_{n-1}):K].

whence xn∈K(x1,...,xn−1)x_n \in K(x_1, ..., x_{n-1}). This shows that K(S−{xn})=K(S)K(S - \{x_n\}) = K(S).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
