Algebra, V, p. 105, § 13. p-radical extensions of height _ 1

Let D be a derivation of E such that Dp=DD^p = D and let K be the kernel of D. Suppose that there exists a non-zero x in E such that D(x)=xD(x) = x. Then K is a subfield of E containing EpE^p and we have [E:K]=p[E : K] = p.

It is clear that K is a subfield of E containing EpE^p. Denote by KiK_i the kernel of D−iD - i for i∈Fpi \in \mathbf{F}_p. We have K0=KK_0 = K and Lemma 1 shows that E=⨁i∈FpKiE = \bigoplus_{i \in \mathbf{F}_p} K_i. Let i∈Fpi \in \mathbf{F}_p and let uu be in KiK_i; we have

D(xu)=D(x)⋅u+x⋅D(u)=xu+x(iu)=(i+1)xu D(xu) = D(x) \cdot u + x \cdot D(u) = xu + x(iu) = (i + 1)xu
whence xu∈Ki+1xu \in K_{i+1}. Since x is non-zero, multiplication by x is an automorphism of the vector K-space E which maps KiK_i onto Ki+1K_{i+1} for all i∈Fpi \in \mathbf{F}_p. Since [K0:K]=1[K_0 : K] = 1, we have [Ki:K]=1[K_i : K] = 1 for all i∈Fpi \in \mathbf{F}_p whence [E:K]=p[E : K] = p.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
