— Let L be a field, V a vector space over L and u an endomorphism of V such that up=u. For each i∈Fp let Vi be the kernel of u−i. Then we have
V=i∈Fp⨁Vi.
For each i∈Fp denote by Pi(X) the polynomial −∏j=i(X−j). We have
(X−i)Pi(X)=X−Xp
by Formula (2) (V, p. 94). On deriving the quoted formula (2), we find
i∈Fp∑Pi(X)=1
The formulae (8) and (9) show that the endomorphism Pi(u) of V maps V into Vi and that ∑i∈FpPi(u)=1, whence V=∑i∈FpVi. It remains to show that the sum is direct. For each i∈Fp let vi∈Vi; it is clear that Pi(u) annihilates vj for all j=i and we have P(u)vi=avi with a=−∏n∈Fp∗n=0. The relation ∑i∈Fpvi=0 thus implies vi=0 for all i∈Fp and so the sum is direct.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
