Algebra, V, p. 136, § 16. Differential criteria of separability
*Let be a field, an extension of and , a family of elements of . If the family , is a separating transcendence basis of over , then the family , is a basis of the vector space over . The converse holds if is a finitely generated separable extension of .
Put , and denote by the canonical mapping of into . If is a separating transcendence basis of over , the family , is a basis of the vector -space (, p. 128, Prop. 3) and is an isomorphism of vector -spaces since is algebraic and separable over (, p. 130, Cor. 2). Since , the family is thus a basis of over .
Conversely, suppose that is a separable finitely generated extension of and that the family is a basis of the vector space over . By Cor. 1 of , p. 134, the transcendence degree of over is equal to the dimension of over , hence to the cardinal of . From the exact sequence (, p. 128) we have ; since is a finitely generated extension of , Cor. 2 of , p. 135 shows that is algebraic and separable over ; since the transcendence degree of over is finite and equal to the cardinal of , the family is a transcendence basis of over (, p. 110, Cor. 1).
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
