Algebra, chapter V, § 16. Differential criteria of separability

— Let LL be a finitely generated extension of a field KK of transcendence degree ss. The vector space ΩK(L)\Omega_K(L) is of dimension ≥s\geq s over LL, with equality if and only if LL is separable over KK.

Let P be the prime subfield of K. Let N be the kernel of α, then by exactness of the sequence (EP,K,L)(\mathbf{E}_{P,K,L}) (V, p. 128) and Th. 4, we have [ΩK(L):L]=s+[N:L][ \Omega_K(L) : L ] = s + [N : L]; by V, p. 132, Cor., the extension L of K is separable if and only if N=0N = 0. The corollary now follows.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
