Algebra, VII, p. 13, § 2. Torsion modules over a principal ideal domain

Let AA be a principal ideal domain and let 0→N→M→P→00 \to N \to M \to P \to 0 be an exact sequence of AA-modules. Suppose that there exist coprime elements a,b∈Aa, b \in A such that aN=0aN = 0 and bP=0bP = 0. Then the exact sequence splits. If in addition NN and PP are both cyclic, then MM is cyclic.

The module MM is torsion, since abM=0abM = 0. The first assertion follows from Cor. 3 of VII, p. 9. If NN and PP are cyclic, then they are finitely generated, and hence so is MM (II, p. 17, Cor. 5); since each pp-primary component of MM is isomorphic to a pp-primary component either of NN or of PP, it follows from Remark 2 of VII, p. 10, that MM is cyclic.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
