Topological Vector Spaces, chapter II, § 8. Complex locally convex spaces

Let FF and GG be two complex vector spaces in duality. For any subset MM of FF, the polar of MM in GG, denoted by M∘M^\circ, is the set of y∈Gy \in G such that ℜ(⟨x,y⟩)≥−1\Re(\langle x, y \rangle) \geq -1 for all x∈Mx \in M.

If M∘M^\circ is the polar of M⊂FM \subset F in GG then (λM)∘=λ−1M∘(\lambda M)^\circ = \lambda^{-1}M^\circ for all λ∈C∗\lambda \in \mathbf{C}^*.

If MM is a (complex) vector subspace of EE, then M∘M^\circ is a closed vector subspace (for σ(G,F)\sigma(G, F)), since the relation ℜ(λ⟨x,y⟩)≥−1\Re(\lambda \langle x, y \rangle) \geq -1 for every scalar λ∈C\lambda \in \mathbf{C} implies ⟨x,y⟩=0\langle x, y \rangle = 0; again we say that M∘M^\circ is the subspace of GG orthogonal to MM.

If MM is a balanced set in FF, then M∘M^\circ is a balanced set in GG; in this case M∘M^\circ is the set of y∈Gy \in G such that ∣⟨x,y⟩∣≤1|\langle x, y \rangle| \leq 1 for all x∈Mx \in M; for this relation is equivalent to ℜ(⟨ζx,y⟩)≤1\Re(\langle \zeta x, y \rangle) \leq 1 for all x∈Mx \in M and all ζ∈C\zeta \in \mathbf{C} such that ∣ζ∣=1|\zeta| = 1.

The results of II, p. 41 to 51 are also valid without restriction for complex vector spaces.

Exercises

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
