Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 2. Orthogonal families in a hilbertian space

— Let E be a hilbertian space, which is a hilbertian sum of a family (Ei)i∈I(E_i)_{i \in I} of closed vector subspaces of E; for all i∈Ii \in I, let pEip_{E_i} be the orthoprojector (V, p. 13) from E onto EiE_i.

a) For all x∈Ex \in E, the family (∥pEi(x)∥2)i∈I(\|p_{E_i}(x)\|^2)_{i \in I} is summable in R\mathbf{R}, the family (pEi(x))i∈I(p_{E_i}(x))_{i \in I} is summable in E, and we have

∥x∥2=∑i∈I∥pEi(x)∥2,x=∑i∈IpEi(x). \|x\|^2 = \sum_{i \in I} \|p_{E_i}(x)\|^2 , \quad x = \sum_{i \in I} p_{E_i}(x) .

b) Conversely, if (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I} is a family of elements of E such that xi∈Eix_i \in E_i for all i∈Ii \in I and ∑i∈I∥xi∥2<+∞\sum_{i \in I} \|x_i\|^2 < + \infty, this family is summable, and the sum xx is the only point of E for which pEi(x)=xip_{E_i}(x) = x_i for all i∈Ii \in I.

c) For every pair of points x,yx, y of E, we have

⟨x∣y⟩=∑i∈I⟨pEi(x)∣pEi(y)⟩. \langle x|y \rangle = \sum_{i \in I} \langle p_{E_i}(x)|p_{E_i}(y) \rangle .

These properties are in fact obvious for the external hilbertian sum of the EiE_i, and can be transferred to E by isomorphism.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
