Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 2. Orthogonal families in a hilbertian space

Let I be the interval (−1,1)(-1, 1) of R\mathbf{R} and E the vector space of real valued continuous functions on I. Let xx denote the canonical injection from I into R\mathbf{R}, considered as an element of E. By the Stone-Weierstrass theorem the sequence (xn)n∈N(x^n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}} is total in E for the topology of uniform convergence GT, X, § 4, No. 2). Consider E as a real Hausdorff prehilbertian space in which the scalar product is given by

⟨f∣g⟩=∫−11f(t) g(t) dt. \langle f | g \rangle = \int_{-1}^{1} f(t) \, g(t) \, dt .
The sequence (xn)n∈N(x^n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}} is then total in the prehilbertian space E. Let (Πn)n∈N(\Pi_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}} be the sequence obtained by the orthonormalisation of the sequence (xn)n∈N(x^n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}}. We can show that Πn=(n+12)1/2Pn\Pi_n = (n + \frac{1}{2})^{1/2} P_n, where the Legendre polynomial PnP_n is defined by
Pn(x)=12nn!(ddx)n(x2−1)n. P_n(x) = \frac{1}{2^n n!} \left( \frac{d}{dx} \right)^n (x^2 - 1)^n .

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
