Topological Vector Spaces, chapter V, § 4. Some classes of operators in hilbertian spaces

Suppose that u∈L(E)u \in \mathscr{L}(E) is normal. Let NN be the kernel of uu and MM the orthogonal of NN in EE; let mm and nn be two positive integers such that m+n≥1m + n \geq 1. Then NN is the kernel of um(u∗)nu^m(u^*)^n and MM is both the initial and the final subspace of um(u∗)nu^m(u^*)^n. In particular, MM is both the initial and the final subspace of uu and of u∗u^*, and is stable under uu and u∗u^*.

Prop. 7 shows that uu and u∗u^* have the same kernel NN. By prop. 4, (ii) of V, p. 41, the subspace MM of EE is stable under uu and u∗u^* since this is so for N=M∘N = M^\circ, since M∩N={0}M \cap N = \{0\}, the endomorphisms of MM induced by uu and u∗u^* are injective. Let v=um(u∗)nv = u^m(u^*)^n; the preceding argument shows that the restriction of vv to MM (resp. NN) is injective (resp. null), hence NN is the kernel of vv. Consequently, M=N∘M = N^\circ is the initial subspace of vv. By prop. 4, (i) of V, p. 41, the final subspace of vv is equal to the initial subspace of v∗v^*. But v∗=un(u∗)mv^* = u^n(u^*)^m and so the initial subspace of v∗v^* is equal to MM by the preceding.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
