Functions of a Real Variable, chapter I, § 1. FIRST DERIVATIVE

We say that a real function ff, defined on a subset A of a topological space E, has a relative maximum (resp. strict relative maximum, relative minimum, strict relative minimum) at a point x0∈Ax_0 \in A, relative to A, if there is a neighbourhood VV of x0x_0 in E such that at every point x∈V∩Ax \in V \cap A distinct from x0x_0 one has f(x)≤f(x0)f(x) \leq f(x_0) (resp. f(x)<f(x0)f(x) < f(x_0), f(x)≥f(x0)f(x) \geq f(x_0), f(x)>f(x0)f(x) > f(x_0)).

It is clear that if ff attains its least upper bound (resp. greatest lower bound) over A at a point of A, then it has a relative maximum (resp. relative minimum) relative to A at this point; the converse is of course incorrect.

Note that if B⊂AB \subset A, and if ff admits (for example) a relative maximum at a point x0∈Bx_0 \in B relative to B, then ff does not necessarily have a relative maximum relative to A at this point.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
