Integration, IV, p. 27, § 3. LP spaces

Let HH be a subset of the Riesz space LpL^p, consisting of classes ≥0\geq 0 and directed for the relation ≤\leq. For HH to have a supremum in LpL^p, it is necessary and sufficient that

sup⁡f~∈H∥f~∥p<+∞. \sup_{\tilde{f} \in H} \| \tilde{f} \|_p < +\infty.

The supremum of HH in LpL^p is then the limit (in the Banach space LpL^p) of the section filter of HH.

The condition is clearly necessary, since f~↦∥f~∥p\tilde{f} \mapsto \| \tilde{f} \|_p is an increasing function on the set of elements ≥0\geq 0 of LpL^p. To see that it is sufficient, we first observe that it implies that the image of HH under the mapping f~↦∥f~∥p\tilde{f} \mapsto \| \tilde{f} \|_p has a limit in R\mathbf{R}, by the monotone limit theorem; the image of the section filter F\mathfrak{F} of HH under this mapping is therefore a base of a Cauchy filter on R\mathbf{R}. The proof will be complete if we show that F\mathfrak{F} itself is a base of a Cauchy filter on LpL^p; for, F\mathfrak{F} will then converge in LpL^p, since LpL^p is complete (No. 4, Th. 2), and the proposition will follow from TVS, II, § 2, No. 7, Prop. 18.

To see that F\mathfrak{F} is a base of a Cauchy filter, we shall make use of the following lemma:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
