Integration, IV, p. 51, § 4. Integrable functions and sets

Given a clan Φ\Phi of subsets of a set AA, and a Banach space FF, one calls step function² over the sets of Φ\Phi (or Φ\Phi-step function), with values in FF, every function of the form ∑iaiφMi\sum_i a_i \varphi_{M_i}, where the aia_i belong to FF, and the MiM_i to Φ\Phi.

It is clear that the set EF(Φ)\mathscr{E}_F(\Phi) of Φ\Phi-step functions with values in FF is a vector space over R\mathbf{R} or C\mathbf{C}. We have just seen in Prop. 17 that the set E(Φ)\mathscr{E}(\Phi) of real-valued Φ\Phi-step functions is an algebra over R\mathbf{R}; it is also the linear subspace of RA\mathbf{R}^A generated by the characteristic functions of the sets of Φ\Phi.

By the Lemma, every function in EF(Φ)\mathscr{E}_F(\Phi) may be written f=∑jcjφNjf = \sum_j c_j \varphi_{N_j}, where the Nj∈ΦN_j \in \Phi are pairwise disjoint; from this it follows that ∣f∣=∑j∣cj∣φNj|f| = \sum_j |c_j| \varphi_{N_j} belongs to E(Φ)\mathscr{E}(\Phi). In particular, E(Φ)\mathscr{E}(\Phi) is a Riesz space, since the upper envelope of two functions in E(Φ)\mathscr{E}(\Phi) belongs to E(Φ)\mathscr{E}(\Phi).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
