Integration, chapter IV, § 4. Integrable functions and sets

— Let XX be a locally compact space, Φ\Phi a clan of subsets of XX, containing the set of compact subsets of XX. For every continuous mapping ff of XX into a Banach space FF (resp. every continuous, real-valued function f⩾0f \geqslant 0 on XX) with compact support KK, there exists a sequence (gn)(g_n) of functions in EF(Φ)\mathscr{E}_F(\Phi) with support contained in KK (resp. a sequence (gn)(g_n) of functions in E(Φ)\mathscr{E}(\Phi) such that 0⩽gn⩽f0 \leqslant g_n \leqslant f for every nn) that converges uniformly to ff *(resp. ff).

Since ff is uniformly continuous on KK, one can cover KK by a finite number of compact sets MiM_i (1≤i≤m1 \leq i \leq m) such that the oscillation of ff on each MiM_i is ≤1/n\leq 1/n. Since the MiM_i and KK belong to Φ\Phi, there exists a partition of KK into sets Nj∈ΦN_j \in \Phi such that each of the sets Mi∩KM_i \cap K is the union of a certain number of the NjN_j (No. 9, Lemma). Let aja_j be an element of FF such that ∣f(x)−aj∣≤1/n|f(x) - a_j| \leq 1/n on NjN_j. Setting gn=∑jajφNjg_n = \sum_j a_j \varphi_{N_j}, we have ∣f−gn∣≤1/n|f - g_n| \leq 1/n, whence the proposition in this case. One argues similarly for a continuous real-valued function ff, on taking aj=inf⁡x∈Njf(x)a_j = \inf_{x \in N_j} f(x) and gn=∑jajφNjg_n = \sum_j a_j \varphi_{N_j}.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
