Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 2. Enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra

Let tt be a tensor in Tn∩JT_{n} \cap J. The homogeneous component tnt_{n} of tt of order nn is in the kernel II of the canonical homomorphism T→ST \to S.

We write tnt_{n} in the form ∑i=1rxMi\sum_{i=1}^{r} x_{M_{i}}, where the MiM_{i} are sequences of nn elements of Λ\Lambda. The mapping σ\sigma extends to a homomorphism of the algebra TT into the algebra LK(P)\mathscr{L}_{K}(P) (which we shall also denote by σ\sigma), which is zero on JJ. By Lemma 2, σ(t).1\sigma(t) . 1 is a polynomial whose terms of highest degree are ∑i=1rzMi\sum_{i=1}^{r} z_{M_{i}}. As t∈Jt \in J, σ(t)=0\sigma(t) = 0 and hence ∑i=1rzMi=0\sum_{i=1}^{r} z_{M_{i}} = 0 in PP. Now PP is canonically identified with SS, since gg has basis (xλ)(x_{\lambda}). Hence the canonical image of tnt_{n} in SS is zero, that is tn∈It_{n} \in I.

We can now prove Theorem 1. It is necessary to prove that the canonical homomorphism of SS onto GG is injective. In other words, if t∈Tnt \in T^{n} and ψ\psi denotes the canonical homomorphism of TT onto UU, it is necessary to show that the condition ψ(t)∈Un−1\psi(t) \in U_{n-1} implies t∈It \in I. Now ψ(t)∈Un−1\psi(t) \in U_{n-1} means that there exists a tensor t′∈Tn−1t' \in T_{n-1} such that t−t′∈Jt - t' \in J. The tensor t−t′t - t' admits tt as homogeneous component of order nn and hence t∈It \in I by Lemma 3.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
