Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 2. Enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra

*Let hh be a subalgebra of the Lie algebra gg and U′U' its enveloping algebra. Suppose that the KK-modules hh and g/hg/h are free (for example if KK is a field). Let (xα)α∈L(x_\alpha)_{\alpha \in L} be a basis of hh and (yβ)β∈M(y_\beta)_{\beta \in M} a family of elements of gg whose canonical images in g/hg/h form a basis of g/hg/h.

(a) The canonical homomorphism of U′U' into UU is injective.

(b) If MM is totally ordered, the elements yβ1…yβqy_{\beta_1} \ldots y_{\beta_q}, where β1≤⋯≤βq\beta_1 \leq \cdots \leq \beta_q, form a basis of UU considered as a left or right module over U′U'.

We give L∪ML \cup M a total ordering such that every element of LL is less than every element of MM. The elements xα1xα2…xαpx_{\alpha_1} x_{\alpha_2} \ldots x_{\alpha_p} calculated in U′U' (where α1≤⋯≤αp\alpha_1 \leq \cdots \leq \alpha_p) form a basis of U′U' (Corollary 3). The elements

xα1…xαpyβ1…yβq x_{\alpha_1} \ldots x_{\alpha_p} y_{\beta_1} \ldots y_{\beta_q}

calculated in UU (where α1≤⋯≤αp≤β1≤⋯≤βq\alpha_1 \leq \cdots \leq \alpha_p \leq \beta_1 \leq \cdots \leq \beta_q) similarly form a basis of UU. Hence the canonical homomorphism of U′U' into UU maps the elements of a basis of U′U' to linearly independent elements of UU and is therefore injective. It is moreover seen that the yβ1…yβqy_{\beta_1} \ldots y_{\beta_q} (where β1≤⋯≤βq\beta_1 \leq \cdots \leq \beta_q) form a basis of UU considered as a left U′U'-module. Ordering L∪ML \cup M so that every element of MM is less than every element of LL, it is similarly seen that the yβ1…yβqy_{\beta_1} \ldots y_{\beta_q} (where β1≤⋯≤βq\beta_1 \leq \cdots \leq \beta_q) form a basis of UU considered as a right U′U'-module.

Under the conditions of Corollary 5, U′U' is identified with the subalgebra of UU generated by hh by means of the canonical homomorphism of U′U' into UU.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
