Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 3. Representations

*Let M be a semi-simple g-module. Then the submodule M0M_0 of invariant elements of M admits one and only one supplement stable under the xMx_M, namely the submodule M1M_1 generated by the xM.mx_M.m (x∈g,m∈Mx \in g, m \in M).

Let M′M' be a submodule of M which is stable under the xMx_M and a supplement of M0M_0 in M. For all m∈M,m=m0+m′m \in M, m = m_0 + m' with m0∈M0,m′∈M′m_0 \in M_0, m' \in M', and hence xMm=xMm′∈M′x_M m = x_M m' \in M'. Hence M1⊂M′M_1 \subset M'. Let M2M_2 be a submodule of M′M' stable under the xMx_M and supplementary to M1M_1 in M′M'. For all m∈M2m \in M_2,

xMm∈M2∩M1={0} x_M m \in M_2 \cap M_1 = \{0\}
for all x∈gx \in g, hence m∈M0m \in M_0 and hence m=0m = 0. Hence M2={0}M_2 = \{0\}, which proves that M1=M′M_1 = M'.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
