Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 3. Representations

Suppose that KK is a field and that the Lie algebra gg is finite-dimensional over KK. *Let aa be an ideal of gg, β\beta the Killing form of gg and β′\beta' the Killing form of aa. Then β′\beta' is the restriction of β\beta to aa.

Let uu be an endomorphism of the vector space gg which leaves aa stable. Let vv be the restriction of uu to aa and ww the endomorphism of the vector space g/ag/a derived from uu when passing to the quotient. Then Tr⁡u=Tr⁡v+Tr⁡w\operatorname{Tr} u = \operatorname{Tr} v + \operatorname{Tr} w as is seen by taking a basis (x1,…,xn)(x_1, \ldots, x_n) of gg of which the first pp elements form a basis of aa. Then let x∈a,y∈ax \in a, y \in a and apply the above formula to the case where u=(ad⁡gx)(ad⁡gy)u = (\operatorname{ad}_g x)(\operatorname{ad}_g y). Then v=(ad⁡ax)(ad⁡ay)v = (\operatorname{ad}_a x)(\operatorname{ad}_a y) and w=0w = 0. Hence β(x,y)=β′(x,y)\beta(x, y) = \beta'(x, y).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
