Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 5. Solvable Lie algebras

Let φ\varphi be a finite-dimensional representation of a Lie algebra gg. Let r be the radical of g. Every element x∈rx \in r such that ρ(x)\rho(x) is nilpotent belongs to the largest nilpotency ideal nn of ρ\rho.

Let V be the space of ρ\rho; let (Vi)0≤i≤r(V_i)_{0 \leq i \leq r} be a Jordan-Hölder series for the r-module structure on V and let ρi\rho_i be the representation of r with space Vi/Vi−1V_i / V_{i-1} (1≤i≤r1 \leq i \leq r). If ρ(x)\rho(x) is nilpotent, so is ρi(x)\rho_i(x); as for all ii the algebra generated by ρi(x)\rho_i(x) is a field, ρi(x)=0\rho_i(x) = 0. Conversely, if ρi(x)=0\rho_i(x) = 0 for all ii, ρ(x)=0\rho(x) = 0. This shows that the set aa of x∈rx \in r such that ρ(x)\rho(x) is nilpotent is an ideal of r. On the other hand, [g,a]⊂Dg∩r⊂n∩r⊂a[g, a] \subset \mathscr{D}g \cap r \subset n \cap r \subset a and hence aa is an ideal of g. This proves that a⊂na \subset n.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
