Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter I, § 6. Semi-simple Lie algebras

Let VV be a finite-dimensional vector space. Then gl(V)\mathrm{gl}(V) is reductive. Its centre is the set of homotheties of VV, its derived algebra is sl(V)\mathrm{sl}(V) and the latter is semi-simple.

The identity representation of gl(V)\mathrm{gl}(V) is simple, hence gl(V)\mathrm{gl}(V) is reductive and therefore gl(V)\mathrm{gl}(V) is the direct sum of its centre cc and its derived algebra D(gl(V))\mathscr{D}(\mathrm{gl}(V)). The centre cc is the set of homotheties (Algebra, Chapter II, § 2, no. 5, Corollary 1 to Proposition 5). Clearly D(gl(V))⊂sl(V)\mathscr{D}(\mathrm{gl}(V)) \subset \mathrm{sl}(V). As sl(V)∩c={0}\mathrm{sl}(V) \cap c = \{0\}, D(gl(V))=sl(V)\mathscr{D}(\mathrm{gl}(V)) = \mathrm{sl}(V). Hence sl(V)\mathrm{sl}(V) is semi-simple.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
