Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter II, § 4. Central filtrations

Let k be a ring, n an integer >0> 0 and A the set of lower triangular matrices with n rows and n columns and elements in k. For p≥0p \geq 0, let ApA_p be the set of (xij)∈A(x_{ij}) \in A such that xij=0x_{ij} = 0 for i−j<pi - j < p. Then A0=AA_0 = A and ApAq⊂Ap+qA_pA_q \subset A_{p+q}. Let Γp=1+Ap\Gamma_p = 1 + A_p. Then Γ1\Gamma_1 is a subgroup of GL(n,k)\mathbf{GL}(n, k) called the strict lower triangular group of order n over k. By Proposition 2 of no. 5, (Γp)(\Gamma_p) is an integral filtration on Γ1\Gamma_1. As Γn={1}\Gamma_n = \{1\}, we see that the group Γ1\Gamma_1 is nilpotent (Algebra, Chapter I, § 6, no. 3, Definition 6).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
