Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter III, § 9. Commutators, centralizers and normalizers in a Lie group

Let G be a finite-dimensional real or complex Lie group. Let A, B, C be integral subgroups of G such that [L(A), L(C)] ⊂ L(C) and

[L(B),L(C)]⊂L(C). [L(B), L(C)] \subset L(C).
If [L(A), L(B)] ⊂ L(C), then (A, B) ⊂ C. If [L(A), L(B)] = L(C), then (A, B) = C.

Suppose that [L(A),L(B)]⊂L(C)[L(A), L(B)] \subset L(C). The sum L(A)+L(B)+L(C)L(A) + L(B) + L(C) is a Lie subalgebra of L(G)L(G). By considering an integral subgroup of GG with Lie algebra L(A)+L(B)+L(C)L(A) + L(B) + L(C), the problem is reduced to the case where

L(A)+L(B)+L(C)=L(G) L(A) + L(B) + L(C) = L(G)

and GG is connected. Then L(C)L(C) is an ideal of L(G)L(G). Suppose first that GG is simply connected. Then CC is a normal Lie subgroup of GG (§ 6, no. 6, Proposition 14). Let ϕ\phi be the canonical morphism of GG onto G/CG/C. Then

[L(ϕ)(L(A)),L(ϕ)(L(B))]={0} [L(\phi)(L(A)), L(\phi)(L(B))] = \{0\}

and hence ϕ(A)\phi(A) and ϕ(B)\phi(B) commute by the Hausdorff formula; therefore (A,B)⊂C(A, B) \subset C. In the general case, let G′G' be the universal covering of GG and A′,B′,C′A', B', C' the integral subgroups of G′G' such that L(A′)=L(A),L(B′)=L(B),L(C′)=L(C)L(A') = L(A), L(B') = L(B), L(C') = L(C). Then (A′,B′)⊂C′(A', B') \subset C' and A,B,CA, B, C are the canonical images of A′,B′,C′A', B', C' in GG, whence (A,B)⊂C(A, B) \subset C. On the other hand, (A,B)(A, B) is the underlying set of an integral subgroup of GG (§ 6, no. 2, Corollary to Proposition 4) and its Lie algebra contains [L(A),L(B)][L(A), L(B)] (Proposition 3). If

[L(A),L(B)]=L(C), [L(A), L(B)] = L(C),

then (A,B)⊃C(A, B) \supset C, whence (A,B)=C(A, B) = C.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
