Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

*Let x∈Vx \in V. The following three properties are equivalent:

(i) x∈C‾x \in \overline{C}; (ii) x≥sα(x)x \geq s_\alpha(x) for all α∈B(C)\alpha \in B(C) (with respect to the order relation defined by C); (iii) x≥w(x)x \geq w(x) for all w∈Ww \in W.

Since sα(x)=x−⟨x,α∨⟩αs_\alpha(x) = x - \langle x, \alpha^\vee \rangle \alpha and since C‾\overline{C} is the set of elements x∈Vx \in V such that ⟨x,α∨⟩≥0\langle x, \alpha^\vee \rangle \geq 0 for all α∈B(C)\alpha \in B(C), the equivalence of (i) and (ii) is obvious. On the other hand, it is clear that (iii) ⟹\Longrightarrow (ii). We show that (i) ⟹\Longrightarrow (iii). Let x∈C‾x \in \overline{C}, and let w∈Ww \in W. We argue by induction on the length l(w)l(w) of ww. The case l(w)=0l(w) = 0 is trivial. If l(w)≥1l(w) \geq 1, ww can be written in the form w=w′sαw = w' s_\alpha, with α∈B(C)\alpha \in B(C) and l(w′)=l(w)−1l(w') = l(w) - 1. Then

x−w(x)=x−w′(x)+w′(x−sα(x)). x - w(x) = x - w'(x) + w'(x - s_\alpha(x)).

The induction hypothesis shows that x−w′(x)x - w'(x) is positive. On the other hand,

w′(x−sα(x))=w(sα(x)−x)=−⟨x,α∨⟩w(α). w'(x - s_\alpha(x)) = w(s_\alpha(x) - x) = -\langle x, \alpha^\vee \rangle w(\alpha).

Now sα∈Tw−1s_\alpha \in T_{w^{-1}}, and Prop. 17 (ii) shows that w(α)<0w(\alpha) < 0. Hence the result.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
