Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 1. Root systems

Let PP be a subset of RR. The following conditions are equivalent:

(i) PP is parabolic; (ii) PP is closed and there exists a chamber CC of RR such that P⊇R+(C)P \supseteq R_+(C); (iii) there exist a chamber CC of RR and a subset Σ\Sigma of B(C)B(C) such that PP is the union of R+(C)R_+(C) and the set QQ of roots that are linear combinations of elements of Σ\Sigma with non-positive integer coefficients.

(ii) ⟹\Longrightarrow (iii): this follows from Lemma 3.

(iii) ⟹\Longrightarrow (i): we adopt the assumptions and notation of (iii). It is clear that P∪(−P)=RP \cup (-P) = R. We show that, if α,β∈P\alpha, \beta \in P are such that α+β∈R\alpha + \beta \in R, then α+β∈P\alpha + \beta \in P. This is obvious if the root α+β\alpha + \beta is positive. Assume that α+β\alpha + \beta is negative. Then α+β=∑γ∈B(C)nγγ\alpha + \beta = \sum_{\gamma \in B(C)} n_\gamma \gamma, with nγ≤0n_\gamma \leq 0. But the coefficient of every element γ\gamma of B(C)−ΣB(C) - \Sigma in α\alpha or β\beta is ≥0\geq 0; hence nγ=0n_\gamma = 0 if γ∈B(C)−Σ\gamma \in B(C) - \Sigma, so α+β∈Q⊆P\alpha + \beta \in Q \subseteq P.

(i) ⟹\Longrightarrow (ii): assume that PP is parabolic. Let CC be a chamber such that Card(P∩R+(C))\mathrm{Card}(P \cap R_+(C)) is as large as possible. Let α∈B(C)\alpha \in B(C) and assume that α∈P\alpha \in P, so that −α∈P-\alpha \in P. For all β∈P∩R+(C)\beta \in P \cap R_+(C), β\beta is not proportional to α\alpha (for the hypothesis β=2α\beta = 2\alpha would imply that α=2α+(−α)∈P\alpha = 2\alpha + (-\alpha) \in P since PP is closed). Thus sα(β)∈R+(C)s_\alpha(\beta) \in R_+(C) (no. 6, Cor. 1 of Prop. 17). If we put C′=sα(C)C' = s_\alpha(C), then β=sα(sα(β))∈sα(R+(C))=R+(C)\beta = s_\alpha(s_\alpha(\beta)) \in s_\alpha(R_+(C)) = R_+(C), so −α∈P∩R+(C′)-\alpha \in P \cap R_+(C') and hence Card(P∩R+(C′))>Card(P∩R+(C))\mathrm{Card}(P \cap R_+(C')) > \mathrm{Card}(P \cap R_+(C)). This is absurd, since α∈P\alpha \in P. Thus B(C)⊆PB(C) \subseteq P, and consequently R+(C)⊆PR_+(C) \subseteq P by Prop. 19 and the fact that PP is closed.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
