Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 3. Exponential invariants

Let x∈A[P]x \in A[P] and let (xpep)p∈X(x_p e^p)_{p \in X} be the family of maximal terms of x. Let q∈Pq \in P and let y∈A[P]y \in A[P] be such that eqe^q is the unique maximal term of y. Then, the family of maximal terms of xyxy is (xpep+q)p∈X(x_p e^{p+q})_{p \in X}.

Put x=∑pxpep,y=∑ryrerx = \sum_p x_p e^p, y = \sum_r y_r e^r and xy=∑tztetxy = \sum_t z_t e^t. Then r≤qr \leq q for all r∈Pr \in P such that yr≠0y_r \neq 0 and zt=∑p+r=txpyrz_t = \sum_{p+r=t} x_p y_r.

If t=p+q=p′+rt = p + q = p' + r with p∈Xp \in X and xp′yr≠0x_{p'} y_r \neq 0, then r≤qr \leq q, hence p′≥pp' \geq p and consequently p′=pp' = p. Thus zp+q=xpyq=xp≠0z_{p+q} = x_p y_q = x_p \neq 0. This shows that X+qX + q is contained in the support of the product xyxy.

On the other hand, if t=p′+rt = p' + r with xp′yr≠0x_{p'} y_r \neq 0, there exists p∈Xp \in X such that p′≤pp' \leq p and we have t≤p+qt \leq p + q. The maximal support of xyxy is therefore contained in X+qX + q. Since no two elements of X+qX + q are comparable, it follows that X+qX + q is exactly the maximal support of xyxy and we have seen above that zp+q=xpz_{p+q} = x_p for p∈Xp \in X, which completes the proof of the lemma.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
