Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, chapter VI, § 4. Classification of root systems

For all ii, ∑j≠iqij2<1\sum_{j \neq i} q_{ij}^2 < 1.

Let JJ be the set of j∈Ij \in I such that qij≠0q_{ij} \neq 0, in other words such that {i,j}\{i, j\} is an edge of XX. If j,j′∈Jj, j' \in J and j≠j′j \neq j', {j,j′}\{j, j'\} is not an edge (otherwise i,j,j′i, j, j' would form a circuit), so (ej∣ej′)=0(e_j|e_{j'}) = 0. Let F=∑j∈JRejF = \sum_{j \in J} \mathbf{R} e_j. Then (ej)j∈J(e_j)_{j \in J} is an orthonormal basis of FF. The distance dd from eie_i to FF is given by d2=1−∑j∈J(ei∣ej)2=1−∑j∈Jqij2=1−∑j≠iqij2d^2 = 1 - \sum_{j \in J} (e_i|e_j)^2 = 1 - \sum_{j \in J} q_{ij}^2 = 1 - \sum_{j \neq i} q_{ij}^2, hence the lemma.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
