General Topology, chapter I, § 6. Filters

Let XX be a topological space, AA a subset of XX, xx a point of XX. In order that the trace on AA of the neighbourhood filter B\mathfrak{B} of xx should be a filter on AA, it is necessary and sufficient that every neighbourhood of xx meets AA, i.e. that xx lies in the closure of AA (§ 1, no. 6, Definition 10).

This example of an induced filter is of interest for two reasons: first because it plays an important role in the theory of limits (§ 7, no. 5) and secondly because every filter can be defined in this way. Indeed, let F\mathfrak{F} be a filter on a set XX and let X′X' be the set obtained by adjoining a new element ω\omega to XX, XX being identified with the complement of {ω}\{ \omega \} in X′X' (Set Theory, R, § 4, no. 5); let F′\mathfrak{F}' be the filter on X′X' consisting of the sets M∪{ω}M \cup \{ \omega \} where MM runs through F\mathfrak{F}. For each point x≠ωx \neq \omega of X′X', let B(x)\mathfrak{B}(x) be the set of all subsets of X′X' which contain xx, and let B(ω)\mathfrak{B}(\omega) be F′\mathfrak{F}'; then the B(x)\mathfrak{B}(x) for x∈X′x \in X' obviously satisfy axioms (V1),(VII),(VIII)(\mathrm{V}_1), (\mathrm{V}_{\mathrm{II}}), (\mathrm{V}_{\mathrm{III}}) and (VIV)(\mathrm{V}_{\mathrm{IV}}) and therefore define a topology on X′X' for which they are the neighbourhood filters of points. Finally ω\omega lies in the closure of XX in this topology, and F\mathfrak{F} is induced by F′=B(ω)\mathfrak{F}' = \mathfrak{B}(\omega) on XX. The topology thus defined on X′X' (resp. the set X′X' with this topology) is called the topology (resp. the topological space) associated with F\mathfrak{F}.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
