General Topology, chapter I, § 6. Filters

Let (xn)n∈N(x_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}} be an infinite sequence of elements of a set XX. The elementary filter associated with the sequence (xn)(x_n) is the filter generated by the image of the Fréchet filter (no. 1) by the mapping n→xnn \to x_n of N\mathbf{N} into XX.

It comes to the same thing to say that the elementary filter associated with (xn)(x_n) is the set of subsets MM of XX such that xn∈Mx_n \in M except for a finite number of values of nn. If SnS_n denotes the set of all xpx_p such that p≥np \geq n, then the sets SnS_n form a base of the elementary filter associated with the sequence (xn)(x_n).

The elementary filter associated with an infinite subsequence of a sequence (xn)(x_n) is finer than the elementary filter associated with (xn)(x_n) (cf. Exercise 15).

By definition, every elementary filter has a countable base. Conversely:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
