General Topology, chapter I, § 11. Connectedness

Let YY be a locally compact, locally connected space whose topology has a countable base. Let XX be a connected Hausdorff space, and let p:X→Yp : X \to Y be a continuous mapping which has the following property : for each x∈Xx \in X there is an open neighbourhood UU of xx in XX such that the restriction of pp to UU is a homeomorphism of UU onto an open subspace of YY. Then XX is locally compact and locally connected, and the topology of XX has a countable base.

Clearly XX is locally connected. Also each x∈Xx \in X has an open neighbourhood UU in XX such that the restriction of pp to UU maps UU homeomorphically onto an open subspace p(U)p(U) of YY. Since p(U)p(U) is a locally compact subspace of YY (§9§ 9, no. 7, Proposition 13), there is a compact neighbourhood WW of p(x)p(x) contained in p(U)p(U), whence U∩p‾−1(W)U \cap \overline{p}^{-1}(W) is a compact neighbourhood of xx contained in UU; thus XX is locally compact, since by hypothesis XX is Hausdorff. U∩p‾−1(W)U \cap \overline{p}^{-1}(W), being compact, is closed in XX (§9§ 9, no. 3, Proposition 4) and the conditions of Corollary 1 are therefore satisfied; hence the topology of XX has a countable base.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
