General Topology, chapter III, § 6. Topological groups with operators; topological rings division rings and fields
A Hausdorff topological ring is isomorphic to a dense subring of a complete Hausdorff ring , which is determined up to isomorphism (and is called the completion of ).
If is commutative (resp. has an identity element) then the same is true of (principle of extension of identities).
Let be a topological ring, not necessarily Hausdorff; let be the closure of in , and let be the Hausdorff ring associated with . Then , the completion of , is called the Hausdorff completion of and is also denoted by . One shows as in § 3, no. 4, Proposition 8 that every continuous ring homomorphism of with a complete Hausdorff topological ring can be uniquely factorized as , where is a continuous homomorphism of into and is the canonical mapping of into . If are two topological rings, and is a continuous homomorphism, there is therefore a unique continuous homomorphism such that the diagram
is commutative ( and being the canonical mappings); we have only to apply the preceding result to .
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
