General Topology, chapter III, § 7. Inverse limits of topological groups and rings
Suppose that the and the satisfy the above hypotheses.
a) If the stabilizer of each point of is a compact subgroup of for each , then the stabilizer of each point of is a compact subgroup of ; the orbit of (with respect to ) is canonically homeomorphic to the inverse limit of the orbits of the (with respect to ); and the canonical mapping is injective.
b) If, for each , every orbit of a point of (with respect to ) is compact, then every orbit of a point of (with respect to ) is relatively compact, and is surjective. If also is bijective, then every orbit of a point of is compact.
Let , and for each let be the orbit of . If , it follows from (i) and the relation that , and hence that is an inverse system of subsets of the . For each let be the continuous mapping ; the form an inverse system of mappings, and is the continuous mapping of into the subspace of . The hypothesis of a) implies that is compact for each . Since also is surjective, the conditions of Chapter I, § 9, no. 6, Proposition 8, Corollary 2 are satisfied, and the first two assertions of a) are therefore established. Hence, if and are such that and belong to the same orbit with respect to for each , then and belong to the same orbit with respect to , and therefore is injective.
Likewise, the hypothesis of b) implies that the inverse system of canonical mappings satisfies the conditions of Chapter I, § 9, no. 6, Proposition 8, Corollary 2, and therefore its inverse limit is surjective, and the inverse image under v of every point of is compact. Since v factorizes into
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
