General Topology, chapter IV, § 4. The extended real line

Every non-empty subset of R‾\overline{\mathbf{R}} has a least upper bound and a greatest lower bound.

The least upper bound (resp. greatest lower bound) of a non-empty subset AA of R\mathbf{R} is denoted by sup⁡A\sup A (resp. inf⁡A\inf A). Clearly

(1)

inf⁡A≤sup⁡A. \inf A \leq \sup A.

If A⊂BA \subset B, then sup⁡A≤sup⁡B\sup A \leq \sup B and inf⁡A≥inf⁡B\inf A \geq \inf B (Set Theory, Chapter III, § 1, no. 9, Proposition 4).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
