General Topology, chapter VI, § 3. Real projective spaces

The space Pn, pP_{n,\ p} which is the quotient of the topological space Ln+1, p+1L_{n+1,\ p+1} by the equivalence relation Δn, p\Delta_{n,\ p} is called the space of projective linear varieties of p≥0p \geq 0 dimensions in real projective space PnP_n.

We shall use the following notation: given a matrix XX of p+1p + 1 rows and n+1n + 1 columns, and any strictly increasing sequence

σ=(i1,…,ip+1) \sigma = (i_1, \ldots, i_{p+1})

of p+1p + 1 indices belonging to the interval [0,n][0, n] of N\mathbf{N}, we denote by XσX_\sigma the square submatrix of XX formed by the columns whose indices are i1,i2,…,ip+1i_1, i_2, \ldots, i_{p+1}. We denote by AσA_\sigma the subset of Lp+1, p+1L_{p+1,\ p+1} consisting of these matrices XX such that XσX_\sigma is non-singular. By Proposition 6 of § 1\S \ 1, no. 6, AσA_\sigma is a dense open set in Mp+1, n+1M_{p+1,\ n+1}, and the function X→Xσ−1X \to X_\sigma^{-1} is continuous on AσA_\sigma.

A geometrical interpretation of the set AσA_\sigma is as follows: let EσE_\sigma be the vector subspace of Rn+1\mathbf{R}^{n+1} generated by the vectors eie_i of the canonical basis such that i∈σi \in \sigma, and let Eσ′E'_\sigma be the complementary subspace generated by the eie_i such that i∉σi \notin \sigma; then to say that a matrix xx belongs to AσA_\sigma means that the projections on EσE_\sigma of its p+1p + 1 rows of xkx_k form a free system, or again that the vector subspace generated by the xkx_k is a complement of Eσ′E'_\sigma (or that its intersection with Eσ′E'_\sigma consists only of 0).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
