General Topology, chapter VII, § 1. Subgroups and quotient groups of $\mathbf{R}^n$

Let (ai)1≤i≤p(a_i)_{1 \leq i \leq p} be a free system of pp points of Rn\mathbf{R}^n and let

b=∑i=1ptiai b = \sum_{i=1}^p t_i a_i
be a linear combination of the aia_i, with real coefficients. Then the subgroup GG of Rn\mathbf{R}^n generated by the p+1p + 1 points a1,a2,…,apa_1, a_2, \ldots, a_p and bb is discrete if and only if the numbers tit_i are rational.

(*) We recall (Chapter IV, § 8, no. 2) that, for each real number x,[x]x, [x] is the integral part of xx, i.e., the largest rational integer ≤x\leq x.

Proposition 1 shows that the condition is necessary. Also it is sufficient, for if it is satisfied we can write ti=mi/dt_i = m_i/d, where dd and the mim_i are integers (1≤i≤p1 \leq i \leq p); bb is therefore a linear combination, with integer coefficients, of the pp points (1/d)ai(1/d)a_i; hence GG is a subgroup of the discrete group generated by these pp points, and so is itself discrete.

The result of Proposition 1 can be expressed as follows: if qq points xix_i (1≤i≤q1 \leq i \leq q) of a discrete subgroup GG of Rn\mathbf{R}^n form a system which is dependent with respect to R\mathbf{R}, then they form a system which is dependent with respect to Q\mathbf{Q}. It follows immediately that the rational rank of a discrete subgroup of Rn\mathbf{R}^n is equal to its rank.

The Corollary to Proposition 1, applied to the case where the aia_i are the nn vectors eie_i of the canonical basis of Rn\mathbf{R}^n, gives us the following proposition:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
