General Topology, chapter IX, § 3. Metrizable groups, valued fields, normed spaces and algebras

Let KK be a non-discrete valued field and let Mn(K)M_n(K) be the ring of square matrices of order nn over KK. Regarded as a vector space over KK, Mn(K)M_n(K) is isomorphic to Kn2K^{n^2}. If for each X=(xij)∈Mn(K)X = (x_{ij}) \in M_n(K) we define ∥X∥=sup⁡i,j∣xij∣\|X\| = \sup_{i,j} |x_{ij}|, then ∥X∥\|X\| is a norm on Mn(K)M_n(K), and the topology defined by this norm is the product topology on Kn2K^{n^2} (Proposition 10); from this it follows (because of the continuity of polynomials in any number of variables over KK) that this norm is compatible with the KK-algebra structure of Mn(K)M_n(K).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
