General Topology, chapter IX, § 3. Metrizable groups, valued fields, normed spaces and algebras

*Let (Ei)1≤i≤n(E_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} be a finite family of normed spaces over a non-discrete valued division ring KK, and let E=∏i=1nEiE = \prod_{i=1}^n E_i be the product vector space. If for each x=(xi)∈Ex = (x_i) \in E we put ∣∣x∣∣=sup⁡1≤i≤n∣∣xi∣∣||x|| = \sup_{1 \leq i \leq n} ||x_i||, then the function ∣∣x∣∣||x|| is a norm on EE, and the topology it defines on EE is the product of the topologies of the EiE_i.

For if x=(xi)x = (x_i) and y=(yi)y = (y_i), we have x+y=(xi+yi)x + y = (x_i + y_i) and therefore

∣∣x+y∣∣=sup⁡i∣∣xi+yi∣∣≤sup⁡i(∣∣xi∣∣+∣∣yi∣∣)≤sup⁡i∣∣xi∣∣+sup⁡i∣∣yi∣∣=∣∣x∣∣+∣∣y∣∣. ||x + y|| = \sup_i ||x_i + y_i|| \leq \sup_i (||x_i|| + ||y_i||) \leq \sup_i ||x_i|| + \sup_i ||y_i|| = ||x|| + ||y||.

On the other hand, it is clear that ∣∣tx∣∣=∣t∣.∣∣x∣∣||tx|| = |t|.||x||, and that if ∣∣x∣∣=0||x|| = 0, then ∣∣xi∣∣=0||x_i|| = 0 and therefore xi=0x_i = 0 for 1≤i≤n1 \leq i \leq n, so that x=0x = 0; hence ∣∣x∣∣||x|| is a norm on EE. Also the relation ∣∣x∣∣<a||x|| < a is equivalent to the nn relations ∣∣xi∣∣<a||x_i|| < a, and therefore the norm ∣∣x∣∣||x|| defines the product topology on EE.

Similarly we can show that the functions ∑i=1n∣∣xi∣∣\sum_{i=1}^n ||x_i|| and ∑i=1n∣∣xi∣∣2\sqrt{\sum_{i=1}^n ||x_i||^2} are norms on EE; the inequalities (2) show that all three norms are equivalent.

In particular, in the (left or right) vector space KnK^n, if we put

p1(x)=sup⁡i∣xi∣,p2(x)=∑i=1n∣xi∣,p3(x)=∑i=1n∣xi∣2 p_1(x) = \sup_i |x_i|, \quad p_2(x) = \sum_{i=1}^n |x_i|, \quad p_3(x) = \sqrt{\sum_{i=1}^n |x_i|^2}

for x=(xi)1≤i≤nx = (x_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n}, then the three functions p1,p2,p3p_1, p_2, p_3 are equivalent norms which define on KnK^n the topology which is the product of the topologies of the factors KK.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
